quicktime vr on the iPhone
I think QTVR is a fantastic technology capable enormously engaging images and immersive environments – I rarely go away anywhere without my trusty nodal ninja and sigma 10-20mm lens
However the issue is that it is quite intensive in setting up and taking the images, so since getting my iPhone I have had the idea of using it for VRs – an earlier post shows my first stab just doing it handheld and to be honest I think it is quite good but I had i mind something more precise
I’ve been doing little sketches over a few weeks now but today I made my first proof of concept model to test it out. It’s very hi tech – foamboard, super glue, a rubber band and a cd and cd case, It is only a single row of 12 shots but it worked perfectly first time.
The nodal point was guessed but understanding the principles really helped here
I used stitcher 5 to stitch to a cylindrical image then used cubic converter to assemble into a .mov file – it took a couple of minutes to stitch
The panorama is straight out of stitcher with no stencils or masks and no manipulation in photoshop
I’m going to have a go at something more substantial next
and another in my kitchen

im loving the new mini ninja mark but you really should stay off the scrumpy jacks ha !
mac os 8….. old skool, i dont think even the macs at the main block have that anymore
wow, that was cool. Cant wait for the iphone to be officially launched in asia. have been doing vr’s for a while but doing this with iphone is really creative. I hope you perfect it in time when I buy my iphone
WOW! It’s so nice.
some japanese has make QTVR by same way, but I’d never seen such a rotator “rig” !! I’ll introduce this idea on my weblog “QTVR Diary” (japanese weblog about the latest QTVR info in japan & the world)
thanks akila – glad you like it – even made of card it seems more accurate than my nodal ninja
I’m working with students who are now making their own for their own phonecams
let me know if you post to your blog
cheers
