Generally technology has made space seem smaller, largely due to being able to travel faster because of better modes of transportation. Possibly the most recognised being the car. Used by millions it has transformed the way people travel. But it does more than that. It has also changed the land. For example when looking at more developed countries or cities, like Los Angeles. They are no longer designed around the human but instead designed around the car. With large roads, parking, petrol stations, you can say that this one invention needed all this space in order to work.

Some of the advantages of personal transportation are that it simplifies travel. No longer do you need to find what train or bus you need. You could go precisely to your destination. However once you consider petrol, traffic, parking travel seems much more difficult, also producing a large number of jobs. The popularity however results in the car industry probably being too powerful.

The modern day computer is possibly the prime example in scaling down the world. It shrinks the real world into a virtual one using the World Wide Web. Shops, restaurants even education can be found in digital form. However in the case of Massive Multiplayer Online games, you could say the opposite is true as it creates a new world.

Like cars the computer is extremely popular, and provides a large amount of money. With a website wealth can be gained through advertising and it also enables products to be seen by a larger audience. Therefore are more likely to sell. In fact more is sold online than in the real world. Some negative aspects can include piracy, invasion of privacy, viruses, online theft and even in some situations obsession with online games.

Technology has changed the concept of space by. One easing the way we travel the globe. For example before we had aircrafts we used ships travelling was very time consuming to go from the united kingdom to Australia would take four to six weeks make it seem such a grate distance and world being so big but thanks to the aeroplane the time it takes to travel great distances is reduced to a matter of hours. Making it easy to travel were you want and being there in a matter of hours .
Two the way we communicate . Before we had telephone long distances communication was difficult for us . Letters and mail would be sent by ship and take long to reach there destination and reply. This cause us to make it easier and shorten the space between the people trying to communicate . And thus the telegram was invented which moved on to become the telephone .

The positive in travelling are that the time spent travelling is greatly reduced .Allowing people to chose were they want to travel and be there in a matters of hours. Giving rise to a holiday and travel market for countries to create capital. The positive with communication is that world leaders can talk much easier in time of crisis

The negative in travel is that with our ideas of wanting to be at a destination of our choice as fast as we can we made aeroplanes they have to be maintained regularly with of thirst for speed we made the concord it was the fastest public transport at the time it was the future but then there was a crash and killed many people causing the aircraft to be put out of service and can be targeted by terrorisms like the events of 9/11. The negative in communication is that sometimes you can be in demand to much with people cause of the eases of which we can contact each other

Throughout the last 100 years the concept and inventions of technology as a whole has had a major role to play in the concept of space. This is as it has significantly affected many areas of civilisation, for instance, it has literally brought people closer together. As in the past people from all different backgrounds, ages, genders, cultures and even countries used to extensively travel on specific animals such as camels, horses and etc. These means of transport significantly increased the time for a person to get from one place to another. Furthermore through this method of transport letters were effectively sent from one part of the city to another by younger, healthier men travelling on horses.
However, the development of the technology; the telegraph changed all this as it enabled the transmission of encoded information by signalling across a distance. Therefore this brought people closer together as the need for travel was not necessary, though the same information could be transported by a person travelling on a horse or camel can now more efficiently be delivered more accurately in less time consuming in the comfort of one’s house.
This is only one aspect of the development of how technology has had a key part to play in the concept of space. This is due to the reason that transport itself has revolutionized the landscape of the earth. As in American history, the discovery of gold had a vital part in the destruction of land as well as the same time the construction of the railways. Both these features have increased immigration of people from all walks of life to firstly travel to America by carriages, ships, or even in some fundamental cases walking. With the true American dream to gain money, but in reality this did not happen. Therefore consequently this led to hundreds of thousands of immigrated people to unfortunately start working in the railways construction to gain money for their day to day meals.
However with the effective construction of the railways, this again made possible for more communication as well as movement, though again efficiently and less time consuming. Therefore new ideas and concepts were more easily accepted and developed. Nonetheless, through this time racial tension was uprising as coloured people were different and were not politically counted or perceived as legitimate human beings as well as treated as one too.
With more current inventions such as the cars, trams, buses, digital clocks, computers, house telephones, mobile phones, internet, game consoles, cameras, basic television, high definition television and many more have again practically brought people together from all parts of the country. This includes less economically developed countries to communicate with more economically developed countries; which again significantly makes the world a smaller place and enables exchange of ideas as well as just communicating to be track with the latest gossip or trends as well as just knowing how someone is doing.
As these productive inventions in technology has extensively improved the way we perceive certain things and improved people’s conversations to be simpler. It’s also made us unhealthy and has made us adapt to using certain technologies such as watching TV, listening to music on Youtube or on our iPods, calling someone or texting someone on the phone, uploading a picture or writing something new on our Facebook or MySpace profile pages to update people about ourselves. As a daily requirement to demonstrate or else we will think that our day has not functioned properly. This is as the development of technology has increased social relations.

Space has been made smaller by the introduction of certain technological inventions like the car and plane. Now you can get anywhere in the world within a few hours compared to a great long trek before. For example, now you can get to North America in hours on a plane, where as it would of been weeks on a sailing boat.

Not only does technology make space smaller, it also destroys older spaces and lifestyles. With the introduction of the car, city street space was no longer designed for the space needs of people. Now the streets are designed for the space needs of the car, so the streets are a lot wider and footways for people become a lot smaller and second thoughts, as they are no longer the priority in the street. For example, an old medieval city like Prague makes it very hard for cars to move around because it’s designed for people. Whereas a modern city like Dubai has vast motorway systems to make it a lot easier and quicker for the car. Technology can also transform space again; the old cities of Liverpool and Glasgow were some of the biggest ports in the 19th century world. Now they are filling in their dry docks to build new housing and office complexes, as technology changed the needs of the space.

As technology changes space, it also affects society and how we live our everyday lives. Years ago the majority of shopping would have been done from your green grocer and town centre or high street. Now your shopping comes from big shopping centres like Sainsbury’s as they offer more products at lower prices. Neither town centre nor high street can compete with Sainsbury’s and other corporations this in turn kills the high street with local small shops going out of business. This makes the centre poorer and filled with throw away shops like pound shops and temporary shops.

HOW Heathrow Airport using the space and increasing.

Technology has change loads of stuff and used the space such airports, ship port, etc. I will like to talk about Heathrow Airport that is located in the London Borough of Hillingdon. Heathrow is the largest and busiest airport in the United Kingdom with 140 flights a day 63 million a day. Before aviation, stared Heathrow was like a village. World War 1 aviation began where Heathrow Airport is now, when fields southeast of Heathrow village was turned into a military airfield. Heathrow has two parallel main runways Heathrow dedicates one to landing and one to takeoffs, spanning east-to-west and five operational terminals. The site covers 12.14 square kilometres (4.69 sq mi). The technology has transformed the airport by making all computerised and using the space and increasing the size of the airport which many people comes to the UK and living UK; Heathrow Airport is used by over 90 airlines, which fly to 170 destinations worldwide. The airport is the primary hub of BMI, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways. Terminal nr 1 was opened in 1968 and was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II in May 1969. In 2005, an essential redesign and development of the terminal coupled, which saw the opening of the new Estern extension, doubling the departure loudge in size and creating additional seating and retail space. The terminal has an area of 74,601m2.. The Heathrow Airport has become crowded and delays, which has been many criticised in recent years and in 2007 the airport was voted the world’s least favourite alongside Chicago O’Hare in TripAdvisor survey , sins the opening of Terminal 5 in 2008 has relived some pressure on terminal facilities the increasing the airport’s terminal capacity to 90 million passenger a year. Is going to be an expansion of London Heathrow Airport involves the proposal by BAA to build a new runway and sixth terminal. There have been many protests against the new terminal for the expansion and environmental campaigners are concerned the increased CO2 emissions caused by the flights will contribute to global warming. The plan is supported by both business and airline interests and the UK government.

i hope it’s ok it was difficult to find info about the Heathrow Airport because it was very interesting, I had to look online from newspaper, video documentary etc.

Technology in the fifties in the form of electric and electronic began to transform people lives. Many of things that are large part of modern life were unheard in 1948. However life today with new technology transformed the concept of space like inventions, places cities and buildings.
In Britain in the fifties, Car ownership was little more than dream. Today the families are free to travel anywhere in the UK and the traditional forms of transport such as trains and buses were abandoned in favour of private cars.
The Internet has brought profound changes to the way we live today, for many people the Internet has changed how they work, shop and spend their leisure time. Even you can use the Internet in mobile phone and wireless access.
By the early fifties, holidays would be for few days staying at a small hotel or guesthouse at a seaside town. But the styles of holiday changed in the sixties when more people had cars, flights became cheaper and people started going abroad for holidays.
Dubai is an important tourist destination. Dubai’s economy was built on the back of the oil industry and natural gas and became important parts of call for western manufacturers. Construction on a large scale has turned Dubai from desert into one of the fastest growing cities in the world. The Burj-Al-Arab hotel located on its very own island in the Persian golf and currently the world’s tallest and most expensive hotel.
The positive way that technology has made travelling become faster, easier and has lots of options of how to get to our destination. The website made the space between the world seem smaller.
The negative ways of technology can include the traffic, pollution, and accident. It also affect the health of some people by turning them into obesity for spending lots of their time watching TV or on the computer.

As technology progresses, space changes around it to suit the environment people work and live in. During the middle ages, the cities were planned and designed to accommodate the lifestyle of people travelling between destinations on foot and ease of walking distances. During these ages there were no forms of transport comparable to what we have this day, so roads are significantly smaller than what we use.

As technology changes and evolves, the way we develop space changes with it. From tighter middle-age streets and roads, to pavements and dual carriageway tarmac roads. As the use and rate of manufacturing standard road vehicles increases, wider roads have to be constructed in order to house this mode of transportation.

As the business world expands, the markets and local traders get affected by the ever increasing centres for shopping. People, unlike in earlier days, find themselves more likely in general to visit a super market or a shopping centre as the ideas of markets have phased out throughout the years, or are left to keep the local traditions.

As cities in especially European countries develop technologically, new areas outside the city need to also develop accordingly. As mega structures and other business complexes do not fit in the city or village during the time, these need to be constructed on the outskirts along with roads and pathways to suit the transportation vehicles of its time period.

As time goes on, the space taken up by structures become void. Here in the United Kingdom, we have moved fom the marketplace, to a nationwide form of economics, with the introduction of structures like the Battersea Power Station, to the present day financial services. During this day, the finances sector no longer has use for power stations and replaces the need for these factories for smaller offices that require less space. Living in the age of information also sees less need for physical space as information can be stored in the form of data that can be sent back and forth in the form of electronic data through virtual space. This data is stored in servers that do not have high space requirements.
