FRANCIS ALYS

Alÿs’s work starts with a simple action, either by him or others, which is then documented in a range of media. Alÿs explores subjects such as modernising programmes in Latin America and border zones in areas of conflict, often asking about the relevance of poetic acts in politicised situations. He has used video projection and film but also spreads his ideas through postcards. Painting and drawing remain central to his work too.

EXPOSED

Exposed offers a fascinating look at pictures made on the sly, without the explicit permission of the people depicted. With photographs from the late nineteenth century to present day, the pictures present a shocking, illuminating and witty perspective on iconic and taboo subjects.

midi

I know little about MIDI really as I’m not a musician even though midi can do more than just music

but I have been forced to learn a little to help Jon out with his project with his midi drumkit

we eventually got it working with a processing library RWMidi from http://ruinwesen.com/

201005260714.jpg

so I was reading a bit more about ruin and wesen……..

there is a very famous programming exercise called conways game of life – there’s a good example here

201005260717.jpg

and on the wesen (ruin and wesen) vimeo account he live codes and talks through recreating this in processing – which is cool enough as it is but the really interesting thing to me is that he then links the whole thing up to a software synth via MIDI and uses the game of life animations to create music

this is fundamentally and conceptually different to what Jon is doing – Jon is trying to get processing to read and sense the drums to drive animations

music >> animation

but what this allows is the reverse – here it is the animation driving the sound, and it sort of works in an ambient tinkly sort of way

animation >> music

I think this is really interesting – the idea that you can take those images that you know work visually and have them translated in some sense into another form – here music – is a rich avenue to explore I think

vimeo link here but quality is not good but you can download processing source file from http://ruinwesen.com/

201005171056.jpg

I have just become aware of some unauthorised access to the software tutorials on KCDA so I have changed the password

to ensure the system works properly it is VITAL that I am able to control access to the bank of tutorials we have so carefully established

please do not share the user PW combination

I will be emailing you all the new pw

let me know if you don’t get this email

just lovely

from the panic blog (panic being the company who make our beloved coda)

a great piece of music from Grandaddy and a great text based animation all done on an Apple II (my first experience of any computer was an apple II when I was in the 6th form in grimsby in 1979)

watch in awe as the guys at panic load up the program to the Apple II from an iPad

this is a lovely video that works on so many levels and a lesson in restraint, concept and just vision – I love the framing, the music, the details (pot of pencils) the animation – everything – just great

you can see the original by stewart smith here but make sure you watch the panic version too here
